Scotland is not alone in the UK in facing challenges with a high prison population. Despite the continuing action taken the recent increases in the prison population are placing significant and unsustainable pressure on the prison estate. The prison population in Scotland has risen by 206 over the last 3 months (to 29 September 2025) and around 14% since the beginning of 2023.

Emergency early release – how to find out if a prisoner is going to be released and access support Victim Support Scotland
The Scottish Government has approved plans for the emergency early release of prisoners, taking place from November 2025 – April 2026. This will mean that some short term prisoners (serving sentences of under four years) with less than 180 days left to serve could be released earlier than their current release date.

The inside track on curbing UK prison violence Prisons and probation The Guardian
Alex South’s harrowing account of violence in prisons (Death on the inside: as a prison officer, I saw how the system perpetuates violence, 13 January) deserves more than our sympathy – it demands we recognise these murders and assaults not as symptoms of a broken system, but as a foghorn blaring warnings about fundamental failures.

Emergency Early Release of Short-Term Prisoners Scottish Prison Service
The Scottish prison population has been rising rapidly and hit a record high in November 2025. This is making conditions in our prisons extremely difficult. The current levels of overcrowding also restrict opportunities for rehabilitation and recovery, which reduce people’s risk of reoffending upon release, and help to build the safer communities we all want to see.
